DAVIS EARNS K.O. VICTORY OVER LIAUDIN AT UFC 80

As reported by Thomas Gerbasi (UFC.com)
Maine’s Marcus Davis and Massachusetts’ Jorge Rivera continued the run of New England sports excellence with big knockout wins on the UFC 80 undercard at the Metro Radio Arena.

In Davis’ case, he didn’t engage the Fight of The Night many expected, he did make a strong case for Knockout of The Night honors as he blasted out Jess Liaudin in little over a minute to run his MMA winning streak to 11 fights (six in the UFC).

Liaudin (12-9) opened his attack with thudding leg kicks, with Davis responding with a heavy kick of his own to the midsection. That was just an appetizer for the finish though, as Davis shot a left hand over the top as both fighters engaged and Liaudin was out before he hit the mat. The official time of the stoppage by referee Mario Yamasaki was 1:04

“I was never this nervous for a fight,” said Davis, who didn’t show it in improving to 19-4. “(Trainer) Mark DellaGrotte said ‘throw a kick, and it will set up your hands.’ So I did and it worked.”

TOP 10 RANKED DAVIS TO BATTLE JESS LIAUDIN AT UFC 80

After winning 10 in a row (5 in the UFC) Marcus has gained a top 10 welterweight ranking at MMAWeekly (as of 11/14/07).  He looks to move up the rankings as he takes on Jess Liaudin at UFC 80.  The event will be held at the Metro Radio Arena in England.  Click here for more details.

MARCUS EARNS BOTH "FIGHT OF THE NIGHT" AND "SUBMISSION OF THE NIGHT" WITH VICTORY OVER PAUL TAYLOR AT UFC 75
As reported by Thomas Gerbasi (UFC.com)

Welterweight contender Marcus Davis continued on his hot streak against Walsall’s Paul Taylor, but not before “The Irish Hand Grenade” was put through a gut check from his British foe, who gave a spirited effort before being submitted late in the opening round.

Taylor, living up to his nickname of ‘Relentless’, aggressively stood in the pocket against Davis, dropping him with a huge right kick to the head.

“I could have been stopped real quick,” said Davis.  “He’s a strong guy.  You don’t see me getting hurt like that.”

The end appeared to be near when Taylor pushed Davis to the fence while on the mat and opened up with both hands, but Davis weathered the storm and fought his way back, taking Taylor to the mat with a single leg takedown.

From there, Davis took over, getting into side control and eventually a full mount, where he fired away with punches.  Taylor wouldn’t give in, but as he tried to escape from the mount, he was caught by a Davis armbar, and tapped out at the 4:14 mark.

Davis, who won his tenth fight in a row (five in the UFC), improves to 18-4.  Taylor drops to 8-2.

MARCUS
DAVIS DEFEATS JASON TAN BY KO AT UFC 72
After a recent run of submission victories showing his true progression as a mixed martial artist, Marcus Davis came back and showed the Irish fans at the sold out Odyssey Arena in Belfast Northern Ireland why he is called "The Irish Handgrenade".  It took just a mere 75 seconds into the first frame for Davis to claim his 4th straight victory in the UFC and 9th victory in a row.  His opponent Jason Tan came out firing leg kicks which had no effect on the very focused Davis who was calmly stalking Tan while calculating Tan's every move.  Davis then ended the fight by grazing Tan with a straight left before landing a beautiful right hook that sent Tan to the canvas.  Marcus quickly jumped on Tan and landed a fury of punches causing referee Yves Lavigne to stop the fight.  Visit http://ufc.com/ for pictures and a post fight interview.

MARCUS SUBMITS PETE SPRATT BY ANKLE LOCK AT UFC 69
As reported by Thomas Gerbasi (UFC.com)

Welterweight Marcus Davis continued his progression as a mixed martial artist, impressively submitting Pete Spratt in the second round of a scheduled three rounder.

After an initial high-energy standup exchange, Davis took Spratt to the mat and tried to finish him there, but the San Antonio native wasn’t going away without a fight.  Unfortunately for Spratt, Davis’ ground game has grown leaps and bounds since his time on the second season of The Ultimate Fighter, and he was able to get his opponent’s back with a little under three minutes left.  Again, Spratt (16-8) held tough as Davis tried to secure a rear naked choke, and with seconds remaining in the round, ‘The Secret Weapon’ fought his way first into Davis’ guard and then back on his feet.

Spratt opened the second with his trademark leg kicks, and after Davis (16-4) fell to the mat attempting a kick, the Texan attacked with both hands.  Davis, a former pro boxer, roared back and got the fight back to the mat, only this time he did so with blood streaming down his face.  But instead of settling into a ground and pound pattern, ‘The Irish Hand Grenade’ went for the finish and got it, sinking in a fight ending ankle lock at the 2:57 mark.

“Don’t call me a pro boxer,” said Davis.  “I’m an MMA fighter.”

MAKE IT 5 WINS IN A ROW
Friday night (9/8/06) Marcus fought a very tough Mike Vaughn of Team Blast in Atlanta, GA.  For information on Mike Vaughn click here.  As Team Irish knows Marcus fought with a serious injury to his thigh and was not able bend his knee more than a couple of inches making it impossible to shoot, kick, knee or even take some of the ground positions.  When the bell rang Marcus ran across the ring and landed a straight left and barely missed the right hook and went directly into the clinch. Using a body lock he took Vaughn down and worked inside Vaughn's guard with elbows and punches. Vaughn did a good job of defending himself after a minute the fight was stood back up and Marcus used the same technique to clinch again and took Vaughn to the ground again. This time able to pass the guard and work from side landing elbows. Vaughn rolled into Marcus and Marcus tried to take his back but with the bad leg wasn't able to secure the position and as Vaughn rolled into him Marcus was now holding Vaughn in his guard. Unfortunately for Vaughn who seemed to be a little over anxious about finally being on top he tried to land some big shots only opening himself to a arm bar getting submitted at 4 minute mark in the 1st round.

MARCUS POSTS STATEMENT REGARDING HIS TUF2 FIGHT
I want to start by saying thank you to my family, friends and those on the net that have supported me throughout the show. I want to apologize for failing to pull the trigger. I had an opportunity to do something great and unfortunately, I fell short. After the fight they took me back to my warm up room to tell me that one of my best friends had died in his sleep from cancer, hence, the crying when they bring in my team and the cameras to say good bye. It was not because I lost the fight. Earlier in the show I complained of pain in my face and foot and was misdiagnosed, but after the fight I was taken to the hospital and they found a raging staph. (bacterial) infection under my right eye and in my foot. I had surgery on them and was lucky that I had it when I did (in my doctor’s words). If I had waited any longer to have it removed I would have lost the balls of my feet and it would have traveled to my brain in no time- scary to comprehend that I could have died. As my students know it’s been 12 weeks since the fight and my shoulder still has not healed from the slam the Joe gave me. Must be the age! Unbelievable that I could have so many fights and training but get injured from a takedown. When Joe slammed me I ended up separating my shoulder and spraining my clavicle and AC joint. When Joe moved to the cross mount I couldn’t escape because I couldn’t move my right arm or shoulder to post or perform any techniques. Things are not over for me. All though I certainly didn’t perform well at fight time, during the show in the gym I showed that I was the best stand up fighter there. I even sparred with the heavyweights and Randy Couture. So many good things have happened because of the show. I made some great friends- Jorge, Rich, Brad, Seth, Rob, Luke, Sammy and even Joe, I have stayed in contact with since- I also got to meet some great people on the net from the forums. So in the end I was not the Ultimate fighter. Joe Stevenson was the better man that night. Would I do it again- yeah definitely!
- Marcus
